FIELD: mechanical engineering; internal combustion engines in which compression and expansion take place in different cylinders. SUBSTANCE: method is characterized by the fact that air is compressed in compression cylinder and is bypassed into combustion chamber whereto steam is additionally supplied, fuel is combusted in combustion chamber, and expansion is provided in expansion cylinders with exhaust gases cooled in heat transfer gas duct of recuperative heat exchanger, drop water is separated, filtered and heated in heat-absorbing water duct of recuperative heat exchanger, is evaporated using heat liberated in combustion chamber and steam, thus formed, is returned into combustion chamber. Internal combustion engine implementing proposed method has compression cylinder, external combustion chamber arranged inside gas distribution device made in form of cylindrical rotary spool and furnished with evaporator with steam nozzles. Exhaust gas outlet channel of expansion cylinders is connected to inlet of heat transfer gas duct of recuperative heat exchanger whose outlet is connected to water heat-absorbing circuit. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency and reliability of internal combustion engine owing to separation of processes of compression and expansion. 3 cl, 1 dwg
