FIELD: materials handling facilities. SUBSTANCE: method provides automatic processing of sheet material, for instance, bank notes, at which bank notes are taken one by one, placed into transportation system, checked and, basing on results of checking, are placed into piles with preset number of bank notes in pile to preset categories. Delivery of bank notes into transportation system is stopped as soon as sensor detects that number of bank notes of one category in pile has reached preset value. Bank notes of similar category which has been selected by the time, are stored in sorting unit until piler handles put off bank notes. Duration of break in bank note choosing is such that first bank note chosen anew reaches the piler only when piler is ready for operation. EFFECT: provision if reliable processing and piling of bank notes at high speeds of transportation. 12 cl, 7 dwg
