FIELD: inorganic syntheses. SUBSTANCE: cerium oxide for glass polishing or catalyst production is prepared by calcining rare-earth metals to form their oxides and treating the latter with acid to produce cerium dioxide and rare-earth metal solution. Treatment of rare-earth metal oxides is carried out at 70-100 C in presence of fluoride ions (2-12 g/l) to final concentration of acid in solution 0.1-1 M.
