FIELD: hydrogenation catalysts. SUBSTANCE: invention, in particular, provides method for activation of catalyst used for hydrogenation of butyric aldehydes and/or their mixtures with other carbonyl compounds prepared by hydroformylation of propylene. Method consists in treating catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure with nitrogen and hydrogen circulating with velocity 500 to 4000 hr-1. Treatment is first performed with nitrogen circulating at pressure 20 to 80 atm at temperature gradually raised for 15-20 hr to 300-350 C. At this temperature, catalyst is held for 6-12 hr and then cooled to 170-230 C. Pressure of circulating nitrogen is then raised to 20-150 atm and nitrogen is gradually replaced by hydrogen at initially chosen pressure and gas circulation velocity. Once nitrogen is completely replaced, catalyst is held under unchanged conditions for 15-18 hr. EFFECT: increased selectivity and activity of catalyst and prolonged lifetime of catalyst. 4 cl, 5 tbl, 5 ex
