FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: 2-etylhexanal is hydrogenated at 140-200 C and excessive pressure from 0.05 to 3 atm, preferably at liquid 2-etylhexanal volumetric flow rate between 0.2 and 2.0 h-1 in presence of preliminarily reduced copper-chromium oxide catalyst, which is commonly prepared by heating catalyst to 140 C under atmosphere of nitrogen circulating at flow rate 500 to 4000 h-1 and excessive pressure from 0.05 to 3 atm, nitrogen being further gradually replaced by hydrogen at temperature 140-160 C. Reduced copper-chromium oxide is composed of, wt %: copper oxide 48,0-63.0, zinc oxide 9.0- 18,1, chromium oxide 19.0-34.8, and graphite 3.0-5.1.
