FIELD: rolled stock production, namely rolling wire rod in small bar rolling mills. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of cooling mean portion of rolled piece; beginning cooling process in time moment when length of leading non-cooled end of rolled piece achieves value αn.-c.= αr.m./μt, where αn.-c. - length of non-cooled end of rolled piece (m), αr.m.- total elongation value after cooling process beginning; completing cooling process after achieving length of cooled portion of rolled piece equal to μt, where αc= [1-2•(αn.-c./lb•μt.l.)]•lb•μt.l.- length of mean cooled portion of rolled piece(m), αc - length of blank(m), lb - length of rolling mill(m), μt.l. - total elongation value before cooling process beginning. Cooling degree is determined according to expression ΔT = K•ΔB, where ΔT- cooling degree (C), B- desirable additional widening of mean portion of rolled piece(mm), K- factor taking into account steel kind and determined according to next expression K= 84 x lnσy - 369, where σy - reference yield strength.
