FIELD: in-service nondestructive flaw inspections. SUBSTANCE: method involves displacement of inspection instrument (flaw detector and instrumentation assembly) inside pipeline at speed lower than that of handled medium flow, the latter being transferred through flaw detector assembly; recording of physical characteristics of pipeline wall material and distance covered in compliance with flaw-detector inspection schedule; location of flaws, if any, in wall along pipeline according to measurement results. Pipeline under inspection is divided into separate sections using individual inspection schedule for each section. Reference lights are installed at section boundaries above pipeline under inspection, coded reference signals are emitted from reference lights towards pipeline, flaw detector instruments record intersection point of reference signals coming from reference lights, displacement speed of flaw detector and operation of its instruments and recording devices are varied to comply with inspection schedule for next section of pipeline. EFFECT: optimized inspection conditions for separate sections of pipeline, improved precision of flaw detection without impairing carrying capacity of pipeline. 4 cl, 1 dwg
