FIELD: chemistry of polymers. SUBSTANCE: described are polymers which are used as agents inducing flocculation or thickening, more particularly method of preparing such polymer in the form of granules 90 wt % of which have sizes of greater than 20 mcm. Granules are formed from primary water-containing polymeric particles at least 90 wt % of which have sizes of less than 10 mcm. Particles contain water-soluble polymer and water-insoluble polymer and are prepared by inverted phase polymerization of water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer or monomer mixture with cross linking agent by spray drying of inverted phase emulsion of primary water-containing polymer particles in nonaqueous liquid. Granules are capable of being substantially completely decomposed when added to water to prepare aqueous composition of insoluble particles, having activity of original emulsion. Said aqueous composition of insoluble particles is suitable predominantly for flocculation, e. g. flocculation of sediment of sewage followed by centrifugation or compression in filter press, or for thickening.
