FIELD: chemistry of polymers. SUBSTANCE: described is method of synthesis of butyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer binder for transdermal therapeutic systems which comprises from 4.0 to 10.0 wt.% of methacrylic acid has phase vitrification temperatures of 300-305 and 416-420 K by suspension polymerization of monomers in aqueous medium at pH of 3 in the presence of benzoyl peroxide initiator in two stages at 343K for 2 h and at 353K for 2.5 h in the presence of stabilizer, i.e. sodium methacrylate (84 wt.%)-methacrylic acid (16 wt.%) copolymer at initiator concentration of 1.5 wt. %. Method makes it possible to synthesize butyl methacrylate methacrylic acid copolymers which comprise no residual butyl methacrylate monomer since high degree of conversion (99.5-99.8%) is attained during synthesis.
