METHOD OF PRODUCTION OF MALTOL FROM FIR WOOD GREENS Russian patent published in 2002 - IPC

FIELD: forestry industry. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to processing fir wood greens waste in lumbering industry and concerns a method of production of maltol of high purity. Method of production of maltol by processing fir wood greens involves its extraction, extract settling, separation of crystalline part from extracted wood greens followed by processing of the latter to fodder flour. Settling is carried out at 2-24 C for 16-24 h, crystalline part is washed out after separation with low-polar organic solvent in the ratio substance : solvent = at least 1:4; then a low-polar solvent is distilled off from a crystalline part and maltol crystals are isolated by sublimation at 95-105 C under atmosphere pressure. Extraction of fir wood greens is performed with liquid carbon dioxide. Obtained maltol has purity 98-99.9%. In realization of this method it is possible to obtain from fir greens, except for maltol, carbon dioxide extract, fodder flour or compost from extracted wood greens.
