SUBSTANCE: on base of deformation of structural member at the beginning of operation of braking unit initial temperature of structural member T0 and its initial modulus of elasticity E0. are determined. At the moment t1...tn after beginning of operation of brake, brake pressure P1...Pn and deformation h1...hn. of structural member are determined. On basis of data thus obtained, approximate elastic component of deformation h(l...n)el and approximate thermal component of deformation h(l...n)th are determined. According to dependence of deformation versus temperature, approximate of structural member of braking unit T1...Tn at respective moments of time t1...tn is determined. Device used for determination of average temperature of structural member of braking unit includes wear-compensating unit, two measuring sensors: deformation sensor and pressure sensor which are connected to computing unit and timer. Computing unit is made in form of microprocessor; its memory retains E=f(T) characteristics. Deformation sensor is made in form of cam turn angle sensor of braking drum.
