SUBSTANCE: invention relates to novel washing and conditioning compositions comprising in cosmetically acceptable aqueous medium the washing base and at least one amphoteric starch taken among compounds of the formulas: (I) , (II) , (III) and (IV) where St-O means starch molecule; R are similar or different and mean hydrogen atom or methyl radical; R′ are similar or different and mean hydrogen atom, methyl radical or group COOH; n means whole number 2 or 3; M are similar or different mean hydrogen atom, alkaline or alkaline-earth metal, NH₄, quaternary ammonium or organic amine; R″ means hydrogen atom or alkyl radical comprising from 1 to 18 carbon atoms. Composition does not comprise fatty acid-base soaps. Invention relates also to method of washing and conditioning keratin material, for example, hair. Proposed compositions show excellent cosmetic properties, namely, combing facility, facility and flexibility of treated hair, high specific washing and foam-forming capacity.
