FIELD: nuclear power engineering; manufacture of fuel elements for nuclear reactor fuel assemblies. SUBSTANCE: method involves pre- replacement of can by can section treated on ends, butt-jointing of these sections with extension bar to obtain desired length of fuel can, and upon electron-beam and resistance butt welding of can sections with standard plugs these sections are separated from extension bar and their welded joints are used for destructive metallographic analyses whose results are applied to fuel elements and serve to correct welding process. In addition weldment is made in advance by drilling one of ends of extension bar through length equal to inner diameter of can section, extension bar end being longitudinally cut in diametrically perpendicular direction.
