FIELD: petrochemical processes. SUBSTANCE: butanes are prepared via hydrogenation of butylene-containing fractions with hydrogen-containing gas on platinum-containing catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure. In particular, alumino-platinum catalyst is used, which is activated by treatment with nitrogen and hydrogen or with nitrogen and hydrogen-containing fraction. The latter, more particularly, is butane-butylene fraction containing 5.00 to 94.0% butylenes and 5.00-94.95% butanes, the rest being C2-C5-hydrocarbons. As hydrogen- containing fraction, methane-hydrogen fraction from ethylene production process can be used.
