FIELD: inorganic polymers. SUBSTANCE: polisilicate microgels are prepared by mixing aqueous solution of alkali metal silicate with aqueous phase of silicon oxide-based material and an additional compound, the latter being metal salt other than aluminum salt, or organic acid, and said silicon oxide-based material optionally containing aluminum. Resulting microgels are used as flocculants in papermaking and in water treating processes.
