FIELD: chemical engineering. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for compacting, thickening, or concentrating suspended impurities in natural and waste waters that can be used in public service and in various industry fields for reducing moisture in sediments isolated from natural and waste waters. Concentration is performed in open-type hydrocyclone tangentially fed by aqueous suspension at velocity at least 1 m/s at a level of the lower one-third of cylindrical part of hydrocyclone. The other two thirds of cylinder are filled with brush attachment composed of vertically mounted brushes constituted by flocculant-modified polymer fibers. Clarified water is withdrawn after no longer than 1.5 h residence time over the upper overflow ledge of open-type hydrocyclone cylinder. More specifically, brush fibers are synthetic ones 15 mcm in diameter (30 wt %) and filaments 0.2 to 0.6 mm in diameter (70 wt %).
