FIELD: heat treatment of metals, particularly, water-oil quenching media for surface or bulk quenching of steel products. SUBSTANCE: quenching medium contains self-emulsifying oil and water. Self-emulsifying oil has the following amounts of components, wt.%: oleic acid 9-14; triethanolamine 4-9; emulsifying agent OK 6-9; ethanolamides TR 5-8; syntanol ALM-10 0-4; the balance, industrial oil i-12A; with concentration of self-emulsifying oil in water amounting up to 2-10 wt.%.
