FIELD: pulp-and-paper industry. SUBSTANCE: method involves polishing fibrous web in substantially dry state by removal of higher web surfaces without substantial increase in web density. When roughness of web surface is decreased by 90%, strength properties of web are not only deteriorated but even improved. When roughness of web surface is decreased by about 40-60%, rupture resistance is increased by at least 5% as compared to rupture resistance of unprocessed web. Method is used in manufacture of printing, packaging or wrapping paper. EFFECT: increased smoothness of paper web without deteriorating of its mechanical properties. 18 cl, 3 tbl, 1 ex
