FIELD: plastic metal working, possibly hot die forging of blanks of drawbars of steering mechanisms. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of heating forged portion of initial blank; preliminarily forging head by three transitions while clamping blank in die halves; finally forging head in the form of cup having zone being transition to rod with oval cross section; at first and second transitions of preliminarily forging forming head in the form of two cones joined by their large bases. Diameter of bases consists 1.2 - 1.4 of diameter of initial blank made during first transition and 1.7 -1.9 of diameter of initial blank for head made during second transition. Height of each cone consists 1.8 - 2.0 diameters of initial blank for head made at first transition and 1.6 - 1.7 of diameter of initial blank for head made at second transition. At third transition of preliminary forging step spherical head is formed; said head has tore-like portion with radius equal to 0.3 - 0.4 of diameter of initial blank. Then blank is locally clamped in die halves along its portion joined with formed head. EFFECT: enhanced stability of forging process, lowered number of rejected parts, reduced metal consumption. 1 dwg, 1 ex
