FIELD: cold die forging of rod articles with heads such as ball pins. SUBSTANCE: method for forming ball pin comprises steps of forming (during first two transitions of preliminary upsetting) two cone portions with intermediate barrel-like member to which large bases of cone portions are adjoined; at first and second transitions setting predetermined relation of volume of formed head and volume of ball of ready ball pin, setting predetermined relation of diameter of large bases of cone portions and diameter of ball of ready ball pin. Inclination angle of cone generatrices is set in predetermined range at first and second transitions; at third transition rod portion of pin is upset and ball head is formed; at forth transition rod portion is reduced for knurling thread. EFFECT: enhanced stability of forming process. 8 dwg, 1 ex
