FIELD: analytical chemistry. SUBSTANCE: invention can find use in detection of nickel (II) in aqueous solutions, specifically, in sewage and production solutions. Indicator composition to detect nickel (II) in aqueous solutions contains 1(2-pyridylaso)-2-naphthol, water, sorbent (amphoteric ion exchanger) as well as masking substances (sodium fluoride and thioglycolic acid) with following proportion of components, per cent by mass: amphoteric ion exchanger 0.1; sodium fluoride 0.2; pyridylaso-naphthol 0.0001, thioglycolic acid 0.046; water being the balance. EFFECT: simplified analysis, enhanced sensitivity and selectivity of composition. 3 tbl
