FIELD: well examination technology.

SUBSTANCE: method includes preliminary marking of lengths by combined magnetic marks in form of known row of n portions of different level of magnetization being magnetic equivalents of information quanta and applied to cable armor along these lengths with interval L, the signal is registered which matches length of interval L, row of n reading devices is placed along moving cable at interval L, on output of each of said devices matching signal is formed which is proportional to level of magnetization of portion of cable armor being adjacent to matching reading device, number n of reading devices in a row equals number of said portions of different level of magnetization used for presenting combined magnetic marks, on output of each of n reading devices an amplifier is placed, transfer coefficients are given, according to which a row of products of multiplication of transfer coefficients of amplifiers and matching reading devices in row at precision up to a constant multiplier matches mirror representation of said known row of portions of different magnetization level of cable armor portions used for presenting combined magnetic marks, displaced along cable relatively to limit of said measured length for length Lm matching length of n mentioned portions of different level of magnetization, row of which is used for presenting combined magnetic marks, output signals of amplifiers are summed, resulting sum of output signals of amplifiers is used as given filtered row, direction V of cable movement is determined, decision about said measured length limit location is selected on basis of moment of distribution of said signal which is a sign of reaching a limit level U0 pointed out by said filtered row of signals with use of information about length of interval L, about value of limit level U0 and about direction V of movement of armored cable. Device for realization of said method includes row of n reading devices placed along moving cable at interval L, outputs of which through matching amplifiers are connected to matching inputs of summation block with n inputs, output of said block is connected to second input of comparing block. Also provided are calculating block and cable movement direction determining block, first input of calculating block is connected to outputs of comparing block and first output of device, which are connected, second input of calculating block is connected to output of cable movement direction determining block, third input of calculating block is connected to output of memory block and first input of comparing block which are connected, output of calculating block is used for second output of device for determining limits of measured lengths.
