FIELD: petroleum chemistry, chemical technology.
SUBSTANCE: method involves decomposition of alkyl-tert.-butyl ester wherein alkyl group comprises one, two or three carbon atoms in the presence of cationite catalyst followed by separation of reaction mixture by rectification and aqueous extraction of formed (C1-C3)-alcohol and, preferably, recirculation of at least part of non-converted alkyl-tert.-butyl ester to reaction zone(s) when substances in reaction zone(s) are maintained completely or greater part in liquid state, temperature from 70 to 120 C and conversion of alkyl-tert.-butyl ester 50% for a run, not above. Invention provides enhancing activity of catalyst, simplifying technology for separation.
