METHOD OF MANUFACTURING A PART FROM CARBIDE-BASED REFRACTORY COMPOSITE MATERIAL Russian patent published in 2004 - IPC

FIELD: refractory materials.

SUBSTANCE: invention is directed to methods of obtaining refractory carbides, in particular to making composites with ceramic matrix containing refractory carbides for use in manufacture of engine parts exposed to high temperature and so on. Carbon-rich starting polymer to give silicon carbide and extra carbon is first prepared. Polymer is mixed with refractory metal to form mixture wherein proportion of refractory metal is selected to assure stoichiometric amounts of extra carbon and refractory metal. Mixture is molded into preformed part. Preform is then heated to provide thermal decomposition of starting polymer resulting in formation of silicon carbide and extra carbon. The latter interacts with refractory metal to form refractory metal carbide.

EFFECT: increased heat resistance and diminished probability of reaction of excessive refractory metals with reinforcing phases.
