FIELD: radio engineering, applicable in systems of passive radio monitoring for identification, direction finding and determination of the location of ground and air objects by radiations of their short-wave transmitters at a use of one receiving station.

SUBSTANCE: the quantity of beams reflected from the target is determined, and for a single-beam signal determined is whether a ground or an air object is identified according to the object speed, for a ground object the type of the incoming wave is determined by comparison with the threshold of the averaged elevation angle bearing, for a multi-beam signal the overaged bearings of each beam are obtained, and the maximum difference between the averaged bearings of beams is found, the maximum difference with the threshold is compared, and the wave type is determined according the result: surface-space wave or space wave, and proceeding from it the object co-ordinates are computed.

EFFECT: reduced errors of direction finding caused by the uncertainty relative to the type of the wave coming to the wave receiving point: normal wave from an air target; space wave reflected from the ionosphere; surface wave; surface-space wave.
