FIELD: pipeline engineering.
SUBSTANCE: method comprises sending acoustical pulse to the gear along the axis of the pipeline, receiving the acoustic pulse reflected from the gear, measuring time interval between the moment of sending to the moment of receiving, and determining the distance from the site of measuring to the gear. The device comprises housing, valving member made of a valve provided with a shank, movable plunger fit on the shank, two springs, air cylinder whose piston is made in block with the plunger, pressure receiver, air distributor provided with electromagnetic drive with pressure relay, two-position air distributor, plate mounted at the free end of the shank, and receiver connected with the air tank. The space of the housing extending along the axis is separated into two chambers with the air cylinder. The front chamber is provided with the outlet opening and connected with the receiver and pressure relay. The back chamber is provided with the charging space. The front and back chambers are interconnected through the two-position air distributor that connects the charging space with the atmosphere.
