SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to an article, provided with an encoding template, which contains several marks, and the method and device for determining the value of these marks. The technical outcome of the invention is achieved due that the article is provided with an encoding template, which contains several marks, each of which has one or at least two different values. The template also contains several nominal positions, where each of the said marks is associated with a nominal position and the value of each mark is determined by its location relative its nominal position. To determine the value of at least one mark from a certain number of marks in the sub-collection of the coding template using an optical device, marks are looked for in the sub-collection, raster is detected using the found marks and the location of the marks is determined using the detected raster.

EFFECT: provision for encoding large amount of information per unit surface area, the information of which can easily be determined and decoded.
