FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to construction and can be used for melting nonmetallic materials when making construction items, specifically for making mineral wool. Method of smelting in a gas cupola furnace involves heating shaft lining, loading refractory bed charge, heating it with fuel combustion products, loading, heating and melting the charge. The refractory bed charge is created by loading into the charge refractories with openings whose total area of inlet and outlet sections in the loaded bed charge equals 0.1-0.6 of the area of the free cross-section of the furnace in the charge melting zone. The refractories with openings are loaded such that, void volume for passage of hot gases and melt is equal to 0.15-0.7 of the volume of charge filled by the refractory bed charge. During operation of the gas cupola furnace, hot fuel combustion products and melt are passed mainly through openings of the refractories of the bed charge.
EFFECT: increased uniformity of distribution of hot gases and superheated melt in the refractory bed charge of a gas cupola furnace, improved heat transfer from hot gases to the melt, increased output and thermal efficiency of the melting unit, reduced energy consumption of the melting process.
