FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method of producing alkoxylated alcohol suitable for use as non-ionic surfactants, wetting and emulsifying agents, solvents and chemical intermediate compounds. The method involves reacting initial alcohol monohydroxy, selected from secondary alcohols, tertiary alcohols and their mixtures with alkylene oxide, in the presence of hydrogen fluoride and a boron-containing compound which contains at least one B-O bond. As a rule, the boron-containing compound which contains at least one B-O bond is selected from boric acid, anhydrides of boric acid, borate esters and their mixtures. The invention also relates to use of hydrogen fluoride and the boron-containing compound which contains at least one B-O bond for alkoxylation of alcohol monohydroxy.
EFFECT: obtaining alkoxylated products with low level of free unreacted alcohol and with a narrow range of distribution of products of adding alkylene oxide.
