The system for focused search has a web-catalogue containing several domains and/or sites related to topic and/or user characteristics. Each site within the catalogue is assigned a weight which indicates relevancy of the site with respect to topic and/or user characteristics. A search engine receives a request and uses the web-catalogue to focus search on the collection of sites. Search results are returned to the user.
