FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: electromagnetic field is generated by an additional radiation source. A probing signal is transmitted through an adjustable delay unit, multiplied with a reflected signal and low-frequency voltage is picked out, where the said voltage is proportional to a cross-correlation function kept at maximum value through a setup, input through the adjustable delay unit. The low-frequency voltage is measured in two symmetrically lying points using two reception devices, while directing the axis of sensitivity of the receiving coils of the horizontal component of the magnetic field parallel the direction of movement of the search apparatus. The route of an underwater pipeline is determined from the value and the direction of the shift of the maximum of the anomalous signal in one coil relative the maximum in the other coil. The depth of the underground pipeline is determined and visually observed. A device for realising the given method is proposed. The device has a periodic voltage generator with a dipole radiator of electromagnetic field, a recorder-amplifier with two receiving coils spaced out in a horizontal plane, an adjustable delay unit, a multiplier, a low-pass filter, an optimal control and an indicator for the depth of the underwater pipeline.
