SUBSTANCE: invention relates to data transmission and specifically to detection of errors in one data field using a mechanism for detecting errors in another field of the same data unit. A transmitting device generates (302) a data unit which includes a first field, having a first set of bits which includes an error detection area, and a second field having a second set of bits; selects (304) an error insertion mask based on the second set of bits; alters (306) the first set of bits using the error insertion mask to generate an altered first set of bits; and transmits (308) the data unit to a receiving device which decodes the second set of bits to generate decoding results; selects the error insertion mask based on the decoding results; alters the first set of bits using the error insertion mask to generate an altered first set of bits, which includes the resultant value of error detection, indicated in the error detection area; and determines whether the decoding results are correct for the second field based on the resultant value of error detection.
EFFECT: reliable error detection for a field with or without limitation of bits reserved for error detection.
