FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for liquid-phase catalytic oxidation of an aromatic compound and can be used for oxidation of aldehydes to acids, alkylaromatic compounds to alcohols, acids or diacids. The method involves feeding starting material to be oxidised into the reaction zone of an initial reactor, feeding the gaseous phase stream of the oxidising agent containing molecular oxygen, oxidation of the compound to be oxidised into the liquid phase of the reaction medium contained in an agitated reactor, where the said reaction medium has gas content of at least approximately 0.6 averaged on time and averaged on volume.
EFFECT: technology provides a highly efficient reaction at relatively low temperatures, where if the oxidised compound is para-xylene and the oxidation reaction product is crude terephthalic acid, such a product can be purified and extracted using technologies cheaper than those that could have been used if the product was obtained using a traditional high-temperature oxidation method.
