FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods of treating sludge formed during water treatment. In order to realise the method, (a) an effective amount of a phosphorus-containing compound selected from organic phosphonium compounds to the sludge; and (b) keeping the phosphonium compound in contact with the sludge for a period of time sufficient for obtaining treated sludge in which overall reduction of pathogenic organisms corresponds to log reduction which is twice or more than the number of pathogenic organisms present in untreated sludge. The phosphonium compound is a salt of tetrakis(hydroxyorgano)phosphonium or a compound of formula [R'R"(CH2OH)2P+]n Xn-, where n is valency of X; R' and R" can be identical or different and are selected from an alkyl, hydroxylalkyl, alkenyl or aryl group, and X is an anion selected from a group formed by chlorine, sulphate, acetate, oxalate and bromide. The amount of phosphorus-containing compound added to the sludge at step (a) of the method can reach 10000 mg/l or approximately 30% of the weight of dry extract. Pathogenic organisms present in the sludge relate to a group of bacteria, viruses, protozoa and helminths.
EFFECT: invention reduces content of pathogenic organisms in treated sludge.
