FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to collagen powder, preparation method thereof, composition based on said powder for moulding articles. Dry collagen-based powder forms a fibrillar structure, is denatured or partially denatured, has average molecular weight of at least 500 kDa, has solubility in water at 60° C equal to or greater than 25% and average particle size of 30-350 mcm. The method of preparing dry collagen powder involves grinding collagen raw material to cylindrical particles with cross sectional diametre of approximately 2 mm; drying said cylindrical particles at 60°C and 80°C until the entire cross section of said particles is not dry and brittle shown by water content between 3 wt % and 15 wt %; grinding the obtained particles to obtain dry collagen powder. A homogenous collagen-based thermoplastic composition, which can contain additives, is prepared by applying shearing forces on the mixture of dry collagen powder and water at 30°C and 160°C and pressure of 20 and 350 bars until conversion of the components into a mass and beads if desired.

EFFECT: articles made from collagen powder have high level of breaking and elongation strength, high tearing and compression strength, and has good flexibility.
