SUBSTANCE: invention describes methods for transmitting control information over an alternating control channel. Various structures for mapping control information onto control channel resources may be used depending on various factors, such as the operational configuration and resources available for the control channel, type(s) of the control information sent, the amount of control information sent for each type, whether data are sent etc. In one version, at least one type of control information sent may be defined and may include channel quality indicator (CQI) information, acknowledgement (ACK) information and/or other types of control information. The control channel structure may be defined based on the operational configuration (for example, system configuration, such as downlink and uplink distribution skewness) and/or other factors. At least one type of control information may be mapped onto control channel resources based on the structure.
