FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to water-based fluids used to drill oil, gas and geothermal wells inside rock mass, and additives for use in said fluids. The functionalised clay composition, which is a drilling fluid additive, contains: montmorillonite clay and one or more quaternary ammonium compounds, having the given structural formula. The water-based drilling fluid contains water, up to 32 wt % salts and said functionalised clay composition. The invention is developed in subclaims.
EFFECT: high degree of consistency of the rheologic profile with respect to mineralisation.
