FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method of detecting defects in pipelines, primarily corrosion defects in pipelines, according to which acoustic sensors are installed, acoustic vibrations are picked up, defect location on the monitored section of the pipeline is determined and recorded. Acoustic sensors determine linear properties of the monitored environment by determining a function which links medium reaction pressure with perturbation pressure. Acoustic signals are emitted at frequencies 140 and 150 kHz. Standardised histograms of probability density for each signal are determined. An analytical expression for each histogram is determined through polynomial approximation. A nonlinearity function and values of instantaneous functions characterising change in the form of the normal distribution law are calculated. Foreign inclusions in the monitored environment are determined from the change in the form of the normal distribution law.

EFFECT: high reliability of detecting defects.
