FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: cyanide-containing waste water is treated with a percarbonate-containing reagent while stirring, with copper ion content in the water of not more than 20 mg/l, without adding any catalysts, activators or medium pH regulators into the reaction zone. The treated water is then held without stirring for a period of time which is sufficient to complete oxidation processes. Cyanides and thiocyanates are removed through oxidation reactions. Heavy metals are deposited in form of carbonates and hydroxides.
EFFECT: method enables combined purification of water from cyanides, thiocyanates and heavy metals with minimum consumption of oxidant, improves sanitary conditions during decontamination owing to use of a low-toxic, virtually dustless, easy to handle and transport reagent and preventing secondary water contamination, which reduces the environmental load in an area where an industrial facility is located.
