FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: phase modulator system has a polarising beam splitter and a reflector-type phase modulator which is suitable for modulating linearly polarised light of at least one defined polarisation state, while maintaining said polarisation state. The phase modulator system has an optical rotator lying along the optical path between the polarising beam splitter and the phase modulator and which rotates the polarisation state of the light beam travelling to and from the phase modulator by a sum angle of 90°. The polarisation state of the light beam incident on the phase modulator corresponds to said defined polarisation state.
EFFECT: reduced output losses and enabling light beam splitting.
