FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: rotating biological contactor for treating water has a reservoir with a horizontal shaft. A pack of plates of corrosion-resistant material is rigidly mounted onto the shaft. Radiation sources with wavelength in the ranges 610…760 nm and 450…500 nm are mounted over the pack of plates and irradiate the surface of the plates in the pack. The packet of plates is partially immersed in the treated water and is rotated by a drive such that the entire surface of the plates emerging from the water is constantly irradiated. This creates the necessary conditions for culturing a mixed biocenosis consisting of bacteria, protozoa and algae, called algobacterial biocenosis. The algobacterial biocenosis is more effective than conventional biocenosis on all ingredients extracted from water and best removes biogenic elements - nitrogen and phosphorus compounds - from water.
EFFECT: high efficiency of the treatment process owing to use of algobacterial biocenosis, which is cultured in a single structure using high-efficiency electromagnetic radiation sources, which in turn reduces labour input in maintenance of treatment facilities and cost of treatment.
