FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an improved method of purifying alkyl esters of methacrylic acid from formic acid and/or methacrylic acid and/or sulphuric acid, according to which at least a portion of formic acid and/or methacrylic acid and/or sulphuric acid is adsorbed by a solid purifying substance which contains at least 10 wt %, in terms of the solid purifying substance, of a silicon-oxygen compound to obtain an ultrapure alkyl ester of methacrylic acid. The invention also relates to a method of producing polymers based, at least in part, on alkyl esters of methacrylic acid, and an apparatus for producing alkyl esters of methacrylic acid or, if needed, polymers which are based, at least in part, on alkyl esters of methacrylic acid, containing the following components which are connected with possibility of passing a fluid medium between them: a component for producing acetone cyanohydrin, followed by a component for producing methacrylamide, followed by a component for producing an alkyl ester of methacrylic acid, followed by a component for purifying alkyl esters of methacrylic acid and, if needed, followed by a polymerisation component and, if needed, followed by a packing component, wherein the purification component has a container for the solid purifying substance which contains at least 10 wt %, in terms of the solid purifying substance, of a silicon-oxygen compound.

EFFECT: invention enables to realise a purification method, having modest power consumption and which yields satisfactory purity of the purified methacrylic esters.
