FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of purifying methacrylic acid, wherein a reaction mixture obtained by reacting methacrylamide with water is cooled by mixing with an aqueous medium and then fed into a phase separation apparatus. Described also is an apparatus for carrying out the method according to the invention, said apparatus having a vertical tubular reactor with heat exchangers and a phase separation apparatus, connected by a recirculating loop with a feed line through which the reaction mixture is fed into the phase separation apparatus.
EFFECT: method enables to obtain methacrylic acid with high output and purity.
