FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: disclosed is a method of making a light-emitting device, involving preparation of a suspension which contains ceramic particles of at least one wavelength-converting material and polymer particles (301), having diameter from 2 to 10 mcm; forming a ceramic material (300) from said suspension; removing said polymer particles (301) from said ceramic material (300) by subjecting the ceramic material to heat treatment, which involves decomposition or oxidation of said polymer particles to provide a porous ceramic element (302) having an average pore diameter of from 2 to 10 mcm; and arranging said porous ceramic element (302) to receive light from at least one light emitting diode. A method of making the ceramic element is also provided.
EFFECT: invention provides a method of making a light-emitting device which prevents formation of a yellow ring around the device and which provides a more controllable and reliable way of achieving the desirable porosity during production, wherein the device is simple and cheap, thereby enabling mass production.
