FIELD: machine building.
SUBSTANCE: waves of two different types are used (for example, horizontally polarised transverse wave and symmetric Lamb wave) for detection of defects of different types by comparing corresponding signals received from defects. Signals can be detected with electromagnetic acoustic measuring converters. Certain amplitudes of received signals of waves of both types are compared for calculation of the ratio that can be compared to distribution of values of ratios for known defects for the purpose of evaluating the type of the detected defect. The device can represent a group of sensors, which has the possibility of being installed on an in-tube apparatus and having several sensors distributed in its circumferential direction.
EFFECT: possibility of detection of crack-forming and other defects in a pipeline wall.
