SUBSTANCE: this invention relates to a method for enhancing interferon-mediated antiviral response for countering or fighting a viral infection with a companion animal as well as to a method for a viral infection treatment with a companion animal by way of enhancing interferon-mediated antiviral response. The method for enhancing interferon-mediated antiviral response involves administration of a fodder composition to the companion element, such composition containing an effective quantity of lipoic acid for enhancing the companion animal ability to counter or fight the viral infection. An effective quantity of lipoic acid for enhancing interferon-mediated antiviral response with a companion animal is at least 100 ppm, the companion animal being a dog while the interferon-mediated antiviral response includes enhanced expression of cellulated surface receptors for alpha/beta and gamma interferon; JAK2; IFR9; STAT1 and STAT2; interferon-induced kinase, activated double-stranded RNA (PKR) and 2-5A-dependent ribonuclease (RnaseL).

EFFECT: invention usage will enable treatment and prevention of viral infections with companion animals.
