SUBSTANCE: method is realised by enabling recognition of the class of a target by analysing the value of the signal β=Δτ0/τ3, wherein if β satisfies inequalities β>β1, β≤β2, the target is considered small, if β>β1 and β≤β3, the target is considered medium, if β>β3 the target is considered large; the class of the target is determined based on analysis of the value of the signal β=Δτ0/τ3 wherein if β satisfies the inequalities β>β1, β≤β2, the target is considered small, if β>β1 and β≤β3, the target is considered average, if β>β3 the target is considered large; said inequalities uniquely determine the class of a target at the following values β1=0.05, β2=0.25 and β3=0.40. The device which realises the method includes a transmitter, an antenna switch, an antenna, a receiver, a recognition channel, a target class determination unit, a "small target" indicator, a "medium target" indicator, a "large target" indicator, made and connected to each other in a certain manner.
