FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a device for converting solar energy to electrical energy and is based on a light-absorbing electrode which is connected to a one-dimensional photonic crystal based on nanoparticles. The function of the latter is to localise incident light inside the electrode, thereby increasing optical absorption and efficiency of converting energy of the so-called dye-sensitised and polymer-based organic or hybrid element. The photonic crystal comprises alternating layers with different refraction indices and can be easily integrated into the element.
EFFECT: properties of the photonic crystal can be achieved by controlling distribution of sizes of nanoparticles which form each layer with a different polarity and, consequently, refraction index, which improves optical absorption and efficiency of energy conversion in a wide wavelength range.
