SUBSTANCE: invention relates to communication engineering and specifically to networks with packet transmission and switching technologies. Disclosed is a method for time referencing in measurement systems, which includes exchanging a sequence of IP packets between two measurement systems and analysing the delay time in delivery of each of the transmitted/received IP packets, treating the duration of the delay of each IP packet as a random value. Calculating parameters of the duration of delay of IP packets via statistical methods provides a single time stamp for both systems. A decision is made on the possibility of using the calculated time stamp provided that the required accuracy is achieved for a predetermined confidence probability. If the obtained time stamp does not satisfy the required parameters, the entire process is repeated until the given accuracy is achieved.

EFFECT: high accuracy of measuring investigated parameters in measurement systems and, as a result, high quality of transmitting data over communication networks.
