SUBSTANCE: method of producing ethyl mercaptan includes dividing a mixture of ethyl mercaptan and propyl mercaptan with an admixture of heavier mercaptans in a fractionation column, characterised by that for a variable composition and flow rate of the feedstock, the fractionation column is provided with a dead tray in its stripping part, from which the liquid phase is directed through an overflow pipe with a flow meter into a lower-lying tray; the flow rate of the liquid phase in the overflow pipe is fixed at a constant level and if the flow rate of the liquid phase in the overflow pipe drops below the constant level, a recycle stream is formed in the fractionation column, which pumps the residue or part thereof, removed from below the fraction column through a cooler into the inlet line of feedstock into the fractionation column.
